Administrative history

"Sephis, the South-South Exchange Programme for Research on the History of Development, was established in 1994 by the Netherlands Ministry of Development Cooperation to fostering intellectual abilities and knowledge production in the Global South. Over 20 years, Sephis has contributed to the strengthening of independent thought, production and circulation of knowledge among the Global South contexts and also to initiatives that help to subvert the logic of cultural dependency that structures the international scene. Since its inception, the program has maintained its primary focus on the debate and activities centered on the South-South development agendas, mainly structured primarily in two areas: equity and identity. This focus has helped creating and consolidating institutions, and has formed many intellectuals in the Global South. In 2013, Sephis’ headquarters moved to Brazil, which sparked a scope, forms and areas of expertise renewal. In recent years, the intense transformation of global geopolitics makes the polarized and binary division between North and South a nonsense. Thus, the change of direction for the central South, besides meeting an old demand, accompanies these changes, oriented to a multipolar structure of power and development priorities. With the transfer to Brazil, Sephis made a commitment to review their credit lines and priorities for action, including the North-South-South cooperation".
